Sacred spaces

This post is in response to the writing challenge given by the blog, thesunlitdesk. For those accepting the assignment we are to write about a personal sacred space. I’ve discovered two.

The sacred may be found in the most unusual of places. Perhaps my most sacred space is the point of contact, a place of interaction and transformation. I do the vast majority of my writing with a fountain pen. It’s when the nib touches the page when the human meets the divine. If we are made in the image of God, then we are at our most divine when we create. As the ink flows from the nib onto the page I am able to create entire worlds, explore ideas and create something that had previously existed only as a thought. The delicate interplay between the pen and the paper is a dance images strung together to form words. The words combine to form language, the basis for communication and knowledge. There may be other place in this world where I feel as in touch with a higher purpose. It’s a creative space. A divine space.

The other day I passed by a garage sale. Sitting on the front lawn sat a chiminea. I purchased it a set it up on our back patio. That evening I sat and watched the fire burn. I love watching a fire. It’s alive as it flickers and dances. It displays many moods and emotions. It dances when its most alive. It ruminates as it smolders and coruscates. It’s at its most mysterious when it releases plumes of smoke, hiding the fire within. Fires are not easily contained. They conspire with the wind to escape and play, consuming anything that might prolong its life. It both destroys and creates. It changes everything it touches. Fire is so human.

I hope you’ve enjoy exploring my two sacred spaces. I’m curious to hear what you think and even more curious to know what spaces are sacred in your world.

Cheers.

Thanks for sharing this. It was nice to read, and I felt that fire – “It changes everything it touches. Fire is so human.” Great line.
