Cool Dads

The sun broke through the clouds and blazed on the parents as they waited for their children at the end of the school day.

“I made a shocking discovery,” said Fred.

“What’s that?” said Raj.

“I’m not a cool dad anymore,” said Fred.

“Sorry to hear that,” said Raj. “I haven’t been cool for six months.”

“What changed it for you?” said Fred.

“Angie turned eleven,” said Raj.

“Yeah. Christy turned eleven last month. I don’t know. I’m trying to be cool,” said Fred.

“That won’t end well. What’ve you tried?” said Raj.

“I went back to when I was cool. Penny loafers and pastel colours,” said Fred.

“That’s bad,” said Raj.

“Tell me about it. Then I tried dressing like today’s fashionistas, or whatever they’re called. Now Christy ducks down in the car so her friends won’t see her,” said Fred.

“Yikes,” said Raj.

“That’s not the half of it. I dressed like that on casual Friday and almost got fired. Went to the doctor and he gave me a prescription for Viagara. Now my wife avoids me, too,” said Fred.

“You know what I did? I tried listening to Angie’s music. You know, be hip with her and her friends. But no one warned me that Bieber was a guy. From the music I was sure he’s a girl,” said Raj.

“What happened?” said Fred.

“I kept calling him Justine Bieber. Angie gave me the eye roll,” said Raj.

“Ouch,” said Fred.

“You know, there should be public service warnings about things like this,” said Raj.

“That’s why we become grandfathers. Grandfathers are always cool,” said Fred.

“If we survive the teenage years,” said Raj.

Kids burst through the doors at the sound of the school bell.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” said Fred.

“Same time, same place, same support group,” said Raj.
